Students told ballots won't count From: Trudy Yaklich
November 4, 2008, 11:42 PM Severity: 3 - medium
Location:Boulder, CO 80302What happened:My 20 year old nephew, voting for the first time and excited, called his mother to report that he had received a call from a precinct worker telling him that his vote would not be counted. He is a student at Gonzaga in Washington, but was voting in Colorado. When he requested his ballot he submitted a copy of required ID. When he got the ballot, it said that if it contained a "pink slip" he should send copies of identification. There was no pink slip so he just mailed the ballot back. The precinct worker said that he was sent a "pink slip" and so need to have the ID in order for his ballot to be counted. He was very upset. When his mother called the Boulder, Colorado, worker, the worker told his mom that this was happening to a lot of college students. She is now taking time from work to go to the county clerk and recorders office with copies of his passport and license so that his ballot will count. Few parents could do this for their child and how many have copies of their out of state student's ID? What proof is there that a pink slip was ever included??? If this is happening to many college students, it affects the young first time voter population, which is critical in this election. I decided to look on the net for voter watchdog groups.
