Ballot Problems in San Diego CA From: Millicent Cox
October 29, 2008, 5:11 PM Severity: 4 - high
Location:San Diego, CA 92122What happened:
I heard on the news that absentee ballots were being mailed in California starting on October 1st. I waiting until October 10, then called the San Diego Registrar of Voters to inquire about the ballots for myself and my two sons (who are in graduate school and doing field work out of the State of California). I was told that they were being mailed up to October 16. We received our voter pamphlet on October 20. It says “If you do not receive your Vote-By-Mail Ballot by October 20, please call: the Registrar of Voters: 858–694–3415. I was out-of-town on October 21, and called on October 22. I was told that the ballots for all three of us would be mailed that day. On October 27, I called again because we had not received the ballots. I was told that they were mailed on the Friday before (October 24) but might not be in the mail until that Monday evening’s mail. They still have not arrived. (October 29.) At this time, my two sons are nearly denied the right to vote. It is possible (barely) that if the ballots arrive on October 30 and I express mail the ballots to them, they could get them back in time. But if the ballots arrive on October 31, that is highly unlikely. I had planned to attend a meeting in Mexicali on Tuesday that is very important for my work. (Obviously Mexicans would not have a reason to avoid a meeting on our election day.) We get our mail at a UPS Store and when I asked today about ballots, they said others with boxes there were having the same problem. How I know about it:This is my story.
